Memory
Cards are laid face down and matched in pairs from memory. Working memory is what a child uses to hold a partial calculation while finishing the rest of it, and it responds to practice — which makes this more than a break between the maths games.
How to play
Turn over two cards. If they match, they stay face up; if not, they flip back and it is worth remembering where they were. Between six and ten pairs, depending on the level.
A tip for grown-ups
Saying positions out loud — "the frog is bottom left" — helps at first and can be dropped later. Children who narrate tend to find the pairs in noticeably fewer turns.
